Iowan Ergodicity

A map showing portions of Cherokee County, Buena Vista County and Pocahontas County. The county borders are straight vertical lines dividing the scent into three even squares. The terrain is depicted with a hill shade and the stream network is shown faintly in black. As one moves east the density and extent of the stream network diminishes rapidly
Iowan Ergodicity: A replication exercise, inspired by Fig. 2 in Topographic Discontinuities of the Des Moines Lobe, R. V. Ruhe (1952). It shows the evolution of the drainage network on till from old (west) to young (east). This is a text-book (literally) example of space-time substitution, a.k.a. the ergodic method. Made for day 12 - Time and Space - of the 2024 #30DayMapChallenge

commentsQuite pleased with this replication. Tried using richdem to generate the stream network from the DEM, but it didn't look as good as using the one from the Iowa Dept Nat Res. Which, I'm guessing was derived from a higher res DEM
